Our mission

A free, open space to document what we see in the sky, so it can be evaluated later.

Every report is saved with its time, place and direction, then checked against what was known to be up there at that moment. Some things will have ordinary answers today. Others may only make sense years from now, with better data and fresh eyes.

Together, these reports become a real-time historical record for the world: open, calm, and free to everyone. No hype and no conclusions in advance, just a careful record.

Why Nightglint exists

How it works: give everyone a fast, honest way to report what they see in the sky, and give researchers clean data instead of noise.

The truth first: most sightings have ordinary explanations. Planes, Starlink satellites, Venus, Jupiter, bright stars and balloons account for most reports. In its FY2025 report, the Pentagon's UAP office (AARO) said every case it resolved turned out to be something ordinary: balloons, satellites, birds, aircraft or drones.

That is exactly why we check. When the planes, satellites and planets are ruled out in seconds, what is left over is worth a real look.

What we check live:

  • โœˆ๏ธ Aircraft: live ADS-B positions (adsb.lol, ODbL)
  • ๐Ÿ›ฐ๏ธ Satellites: ~11,000 orbits from CelesTrak, incl. every Starlink and the ISS
  • ๐Ÿช Moon, planets and the 16 brightest stars (astronomy-engine)

What we can't check yet: drones, balloons, sky lanterns, birds, meteors and rocket launches. Aircraft that switch off their transponder don't appear either.

Privacy: anonymous by default. On the public map your spot is blurred by about 1 km unless you choose otherwise.
